Laser Safety Officer (LSB)

according to §5 OStrV and TROS

Does my company need an LSB?

  1. From laser class 3R, laser operators must appoint at least one laser safety officer (LSB) in writing
  2. The LSB must successfully complete a course with a final test in order to acquire the necessary expertise in laser protection
  3. The LSB is appointed in accordance with Section 5 (2) of the OStrV
  4. The courses must fulfil the requirements of the TROS Laser Radiation (Part General)
  5. For special applications, such as laser material processing, one-day courses are sufficient
  6. In the course, the LSB learns the basics of lasers, the direct and indirect hazards of laser operation, the legal aspects, his tasks and duties as LSB and the appropriate laser protection measures
  7. The main tasks of the trained LSB are to inform, advise and monitor safe laser operation
  8. The LSB proposes protective measures at the laser workplace, assists in the preparation of the risk assessment and supports the instruction of employees
  9. The employer must consider a deputy arrangement for the absence of the LSB (holiday, illness, business trip, ...); training and appointment of at least two or more persons as LSB is therefore advisable; a larger number of high-power lasers or several operating locations also make it necessary to appoint several persons as LSB.

Where can I do the LSB course?

Together with the Bavarian Laser Protection Centre (BLZ), we have developed a compact course. This provides you with the specialist knowledge required to fulfil your duties as a laser safety officer in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Ordinance (OStrV).
